Stage Set

Passing Through, 2009
mixed media installation

Yesterday I set up my new installation in the (soon to be completed) print shop at The Artist Studio and took photos for my application to the self-portrait show at CMCA. I feel fortunate to have been able to use that space - there were lights, a tall ladder, and bare rafters from which to hang the curtains. The walls are painted a deep blue (not my first choice, but fine for documenting) and once I installed the piece, I realized that it's really a stage set. I had fun taking these self-portraits in front of the self-portrait. I plan to ask someone in my building to help me to do a series of these...
I particularly like the last 2 shadow pics...

Does it feel like our friend, the cave painting, like you have created something concrete synthesized from the world around you or maybe more specifically from the "burden" of your life? Is the work a manifestation of the world without or the world within, or is there really any difference?

What an incredible amount of work! CMCA will be blessed to have this. Fantastic stuff, Martha - and I marvel at your ability to execute in so many different media with such skill and consistent style.

thanks, guys!

brad: this process is definitely of the cave painting ilk - obsessive and ritualistic. and yes, it's about the without and the within...i think that this piece attempts to make the "within" visible...
