In the Woods

In the midst of the holiday hubbub I took a long walk in the woods behind my house

and I followed the light of the lowering sun

breathing in the cold pure air

the bare woods a soothing balm after all the flurry and feasting.

I feel held by the woods and go there often for solace and comfort

I sense someone there

and in the heart of the woods

I find her

and in finding her

I find myself.

A peaceful and reflective New Year's Eve to you all!

Millerton, New York

My husband Garry's home town in pictures. I took these photos a year ago while visiting my father-in-law during the somewhat forelorn week of limbo between Christmas and New Year's, when the holiday decorations are still up and people get on with their usual routines. I've been visiting Millerton since 1975, the year that I met Garry, and not much has changed. It's a sort of Back to the Future type of town - there's even a clock tower.
