There are some who prefer to operate out of chaos. Francis Bacon was one. I read that he wiped his brushes on his studio curtains (you can see the paint smears on his door...)I also read that his living space was the opposite of his studio; that it was stylish, organized and clean.

So I guess all those tortured figures he painted are psychological portraits of the various studio assistants that couldn't take it anymore!

ha! i can't imagine anyone darkening that doorway besides francis!
i've read a couple of bacon's biographies. he has a history of significant sexual abuse and was (perhaps subsequently) profoundly alcoholic...
my take on those tortured figures is that they are all self-portraits.
