Pull Me Out of the Ashes

I have made many portraits of my husband Garry over the years. Here is the very first, plus an early self-portrait. Garry and I met in the summer of 1975, and these drawings are from a sketchbook from that year that survived the fire. At the time I was taking a summer class at RISD called Drawing in Motion with a painting professor named Norman Nilsen. For several weeks we drew while moving: we drew while canoeing, walking, riding a merry-go-round, riding in an airplane, etc. We had to develop a system of markmaking, a sort of shorthand. It was terrific fun. I will post more about this class soon.
