Thursday Night

Michael Welch Self Portrait with Super Moon, pastel on paper (homework assignment) Robert SanGiovanni

For four color exercises, I had the students first do a warm study,
and a cool,
then a dark,
and a bright. (figure studies by Michael Welch)

Pics from last week's Thursday night Life Drawing class at MECA, featuring the drawings of one of my students, Michael Welch. That's his self-portrait in the top pic - fabulous, eh?

p.s. have you ever read john irving's The World According To Garp? when i was in therapy doing grief work around my daughter's illness, for many reasons that book really helped me. not sure it's everyone's cup of tea, but i'd bet it's yours...

Martha,
If I'm not mistaken this is a continuing education class. I agree, they look like they are really enjoying the class. Great exercises, they are very lucky to have you as their instructor/guide. Michael's self portrait is very expressive and well executed. I like the back lighted trees. Also his warm drawing captured an expressive gesture. The World According to Garp is one of my favorites and I think it is due a reread. Hotel New Hampshire is another great Irving book. Very different stories but both are weirdly/quirky and humorously funny reads.

What a great self portrait! Those eyes--shaded with age and the veins in his hand! I like the wildness of the background. The whole of it is so nice, that I'm driven to say what does bother me about this drawing--his arm when bent should be lower than the edge of the paper--as it is now his arm is too short--that's it! He can fix this or not--maybe that was intentional? Sorry if I overstepped a blog comment.
