I made this set of nine monoprints during my first semester at MECA. They describe a gestation of sorts. I went back to school to get my BFA in January, 2003, after raising my five children including my daughter, Lisbeth, who has special needs. I was 47. That seemed so old and I felt quite terrified at one level, but determined at another level. Alot of my artist friends didn't understand why I wanted to go back to school. They didn't think that I needed to. But I felt depleted after the years of caring for Lisbeth and running my own business, Allie's Cats. I knew that I needed a major jump start to my battery and only immersing myself full time would do it. I couldn't just take a continuing studies class - I needed to dive all the way in. And dive I did! That January I did the 8 day intensive with about 10 other new students. We covered a semester of work in those 8 days - Drawing I, 2-D I. and 3-D I. When they told us not to plan anything else for that week, they weren't kidding. We practically lived at school and got very little sleep. It was kick butt!! After the intensive we had a week to recuperate before the semester began. One of my classes that first semester was Monotype I with professor Elizabeth Jabar. I felt so incredibly grateful to be there, I'm sure that I must have been annoying as hell to some of the younger students because I was just so damn HAPPY all of the time!

Wow Martha, what a powerful series! That week long intensive sounds like it was boot camp! Kudos to you for going back, who cares about age... you obviously had the 'chops' and gift for it.
I have often thought I'd like to earn a MFA someday; I started the Mama phase pretty late though... but, never say never!
What an intense series. Some of these pieces are truly frightening, yet I'm compelled to look closer. The evolutionary breakdown of the "host image" shows a dynamic force in your expression. So honest and revelatory! That in and of itself is something very admirable.

I wish that I had my larger files of these so you could click and see more details - I can't find them, so these images are taken from my website. The prints are quite detailed and layered.
Yup, the host image breaks down until I am just a vessel with no head! The child emerging from the neck of the vessel in the last print is my grandson, Brey, holding a small fish. Much better than my head!:^)
